Is it possible that yesterday's checkup is what's causing my child to be a fussy butt today? Or is she simply a spoiled little angel? Yesterday morning she had her 18 month checkup. She is obviously old enough now to connect the dots because she started crying as soon as we walked into the exam room. She cried while being weighed, screamed while being measured, and snuffled while having her head measured. Poor baby! The nurse asked the standard questions; is she eating, is she sleeping, can she throw a ball, can she eat with a spoon, does she show affection? I got to say yes to all of that. Then she asked, "Does she have 15-20 words? Does she use two word phrases?" I had to say no to both questions. If they'd only asked if she had 15-20 noises...
She calmed down while we sat in the room, just the two of us. She played with her flash cards and patted me a lot. As soon as her doctor walked in, bam! She was semi-hysterical once again. I managed to ask him what questions I had over her screams, barely. Ah, well. He said it's typical at this age and he'd be concerned if she hadn't gotten mad. That's good. He said she looked perfect and was obviously quite healthy. Hooray! She doesn't go back for 6 months. He said if she's still not talking at that point then we can consider being concerned but that he wasn't worried about it yet. Apparently children are more receptive at this age and the fact that she understands what we are telling her means more than the fact that she's not really talking. We think that she is so expressive that she's able to make herself understood without the use of words so she hasn't felt the need to speak. Whatever the case may be, she was pronounced healthy!
She only had to get one shot yesterday. Thank goodness. Not that I worry too much about the shots but they can make her a little fussy afterwards. It's just not pleasant for her. But we are happy to say that she is right in the middle of the road as far as weight and height are concerned; 25 lbs. and 32 inches! My beautiful, round angel...
